Lessons

I offer personalised fishing tuition throughout the year with a simple aim of making each lesson enjoyable, relaxed and informative.

My tailored lessons are designed to help you fish confidently and successfully whether you are a beginner or already have some fly fishing experience.

I believe that learning should be fun and engaging.  I take a hands-on approach to teaching, with plenty of opportunities for practice and feedback.

My Approach

Fly fishing can seem daunting if you are just starting out and even frustrating when you struggle with more advanced techniques.  I like to think that I have developed a way of teaching to help you overcome these challenges by developing your skills enough to make fly fishing a relaxing and engaging sport.

Typically all my tuition is offered on a one-to-one basis (children under-16 must be accompanied by an adult).  Prior to any lesson I will have a chat with you and then structure each session according to your experience and any specific requirements.  We will learn at your pace, and under no pressure.  I will guide you through every step and support you afterwards as well.

If you are a beginner or a novice, I will cover all the basics including tackle explanation, tackle selection, fly casting, fly selection, how to find the trout on any given stillwater, reservoir, or river, and also how to play and land the fish.

Where I Teach

The majority of my Fly Fishing lessons take place at three outstanding fishery locations in the north of England.

New Mills Trout Fishery

New Mills Trout Fishing Park

The fishing lake is a stream-fed water near Brampton, 11 miles east of Carlisle. A truly stunning location with some large fish. Glamping pods on-site.

Tunstall Reservoir

Tunstall Reservoir

A large reservoir surrounded by forest in wild location. This is a popular boat fishery, 17 miles west of Durham.

Chatton Lake

Chatton Trout Fishery

Located 5 miles east of Wooler in north Northumberland against the picturesque backdrop of the Cheviot Hills, this fishery offers bank style fishing from 3 lakes.

You can find the locations of the fisheries here.

I offer half day and full day lessons which are most popular format. The content of a lesson is not an exact science.  Everyone has different requirements, so I’m more than happy to tailor things to suit you.

All prices are based on ONE person.  35% should be added for each additional person.

50% payment is required on booking and 50% on the day.  Payment is by bank transfer.

Half DayFull Day
£160£240

Half and full day lessons are generally Monday to Friday throughout the year at a mutually agreeable date and time but can be arranged at the weekend with reasonable notice.  In my experience, the half day lesson allows enough time to cover most of what you need to know to get started – without being too daunting.

For full day lessons, time after 8th hour is free of charge.  I am happy to give you as much additional time as daylight and fishery rules allow for at no extra cost.  <<<< OR >>>> For full day lessons only, additional time after 8th hour is charged at £20 per hour (subject to sufficient daylight conditions and fishery rules).

From time to time, I do offer shorter session lessons at the weekend at Chatton Trout Fishery and New Mills Trout Fishing Park.  These are advertised on my Facebook page and are often booked up well in advance.  The short-session lessons are ideal for all anglers wanting to refine a technique.  They are also popular with adults starting out who want multiple repeating sessions over several weeks.  Please contact me if you are interested in a shorter session lesson.

Gift Vouchers

Fly fishing lesson gift vouchers are the perfect purchase for Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, retirement, or just to say ‘Thank You!’ to that special person.

My gift vouchers are not just for beginners.  If the person you want to buy a voucher for is already an experienced angler then I can perhaps show them a new fishery and act as their guide for the day, tackling up and of course, netting their fish!

A gift voucher is personalised with your own special message and emailed to you as a PDF to print or email.  A voucher can be for any amount you want with a minimum of £25 and is valid for one year. The balance will have to be made up prior to booking if the voucher is less than the lesson cost.

Just contact me letting me know how much the gift voucher is for, the recipient’s name and whether you want the price shown on it or not, plus any special message.
